Dr. S. Sadasivam’s book on the importance and relevance of Genetically Modified crops released

Dr. S. Sadasivam, Former Director, Centre for Plant Molecular Biology Tamil Nadu Agricultural University, Coimbatore today released a book, Marapanu Mattru Payirgal (Genetically Modified Crops-A Scientist’s Perspective).

Also present at the book launch were Dr. M. Ramasami, Chairman, Rasi Seeds and member of ABLE AG, Dr. Shivendra Bajaj, Executive Director, Association of Biotechnology Led Enterprises – Agriculture Focus Group (ABLE-AG) and Dr. S.R. Sreerangasamy, Ph.D., Founder Director, CPMB, TNAU, Coimbatore.

Published in association with the Association of Biotech Led Enterprises – Agriculture Focus Group (ABLE-AG), the book highlights the importance of agri-biotechnology and within that domain emphasizes genetically modified (GM) crops in terms of relevance to society and agriculture. The book has been written from the perspective of a scientist and without any unnecessary hyperbole. While it is intended for a technologically aware reader, the language used is simple and the author addresses both, basic and complex issues related to agri-biotechnology.

An important segment of the book explains the role of genes in living systems and in that context also addresses how GM technology works and why it is perfectly suited to addressing the requirements of modern agriculture.

Speaking at the launch of his book, the author Dr. S. Sadasivam said, “I wrote this book so that the people of Tamil Nadu can understand both the relevance and the merits of agri-biotechnology. The complicated molecular biology and genetic engineering are explained in simple language avoiding technical jargon. I have written the book in a conversation style with questions and answers. I hope that my book gives the right perspective to both the scientific and non-scientific community. I am also very grateful to ABLE-AG to have facilitated the outcome of this book.”

The book also talks about the health and biosafety issues which people are generally concerned about.

The first copy of the book was presented to Dr. M. Ramasami, Chairman, Rasi Seeds.

Receiving the first copy of the book, Dr. M. Ramasami, Chairman, Rasi Seeds said, “We need more people from the scientific community to come out and speak in favour of agriculture biotechnology as Dr. Sadasivam has done through this book. He has attempted to address the gaps in perception that exist in relation to knowledge on the sector and its benefits. The book also highlights health and biosafety issues which common men as well as policy makers are ignorant about.”

Congratulating Dr. Sadasivam on the release of the book Dr. Shivendra Bajaj, Executive Director, ABLE-AG said, “It gives me immense pleasure to be part of the book release which talks about the merit to agri-biotechnology. I hope this book will help in spreading the knowledge about the industry and its benefits to the common man.”

The book will be available at Agriculture Universities across Tamil Nadu and can be viewed online at: www.ableag.org/resource/

On the occasion PM Murali, President, ABLE added “My heartfelt congratulations to Dr. S. Sadasivam for having written this well-timed book that outlines the benefits of GM crops and highlights the contribution of agri-technology to the farm economy. Written in an easy-to-read and uncomplicated style, I expect the book to be of great benefit to farmers, policy makers and scientists alike.”
